IMD DESIGN COMPETITION

Role: Lead Designer and Animator

I was brought onto the Miami Redhawks Esports team as the Lead Graphic Designer for their upcoming 2025 rebrand. This was a comprehensive rebrand of all Miami Esports-related assets, including social media accounts, live stream setups, apparel, and gameday/results posts.

CONCEPT:

For my Senior Capstone Project at Miami University, I was asked to find a solution for the increasingly low student body among the ETBD major. Over the past 5 years, the ETBD major had shown diminishing returns in student enrollment for a number of factors. Throughout this project I identified each factor, why it's a major issue, and how it would be alleviated through my final product.

The final product I came up with was a design competition specifically targeted towards high school sophomores and juniors in the Ohio and Chicago area. This, in conjunction with a new reimagined name that fit the majors coursework and the ability to get them onto the Miami campus, made the event not only achievable, but also exciting to work on.

FINAL PRODUCT

SETTING:

The McVey Data Science building was selected as the primary hosting venue for this event for a multitude of factors. Because the average attendee for this competition would be driving down, parking close to the venue was necessary, and The McVey Data Science building has a parking garage just a 2 minute walk from the building. The building also is the host of the Miami XR stage, a huge pull for our program and one of the stars of the new building. Hosting at the XR stage means we can utilize the new technology, and show it off at the same time to our prospective students. The buildings open floor plan and multi floored layout allows us to also set up side shows on the second and third floor, which can be utilized to show of work current Miami students have made.

BRANDING:

With the introduction of a new name for the ETBD major, IMD (Immersive Media and Design), the branding around the event had to match. Since it would be a Miami Sanctioned event, the classic red grey and black Miami colors were used throughout all of the branding for this event.

The logo for the event features a 4 sided star with 2 polar facing crescent moons. The 4 sided star is meant to represent the belief that all Miami Alumni will go on to do great things post-grad, a sentiment that is driven throughout each students time at Miami, while the 4 points were selected specifically for the 4 year track most students find themselves on. The 2 crescent moons represent the often late hours Miami Students in the ETBD or IMD major find themselves working during, to perfect their projects.

The logo is also prominently featured upon the trophy that would be presented for each winner of their respective category, shown below.

SOCIAL MEDIA:

With social media marketing being as potent as it is, an Instagram page was also created for the competition. The Instagram page serves as a second source or marketing to find students interested in the competition, as well as a way to feature previous entrants and winners. The primary posts on this page will be instagram reels of the competition, winners showing off their piece, and photos of the event.

XR Utilization:

Since the event is hosted in the McVey Data Science Building, utilizing the XR stage was a must. The XR stage is a premier draw for the IMD Major at Miami University so showing off the capabilities of the new tech is massive for marketing the major. The XR stage will be used to show off entrants work, and present awards for the winner of each category. Alongside this, the XR stage will have its usual screensaver graphics being played before and after the event, showing a wider range of the creativity that can be used for the stage.

To support this, I also made an animation to be featured on the XR stage which can be seen below. This animation features boxes that are mapped to the high, medium, and low pitches of a song, which is then remapped to the X, Y, and Z axis. The video export is channeled through 2 different cameras at the same time, allowing for more abstract versions of the cubes. Doing this lets the cubes freely float throughout the space and expand/contract based on the beat and volume of the song.
